Wednesday morning we left St. Louis to head to Mansfield, Missouri and the Laura Ingalls Wilder House there. There was one slight problem, though. We got a flat tire from a nail in it, which took 2 hours to fix. Needless to say, we were behind schedule. We went to Laura’s house anyway, and we all were glad that we did. Charlie says that it was a super excellent place. Eddie says that it was very interesting and Almanzo built just about the entire house and almost everything in it.
Excellent!
This is the Rock House. Rose built the Rock House for Laura and Almanzo in 1928 as a retirement house. They lived there for seven years until Rose left for Europe, and then moved out again. Eddie says there was a song by the B-52’s about it. They just messed up and called it Rock Lobster instead of Rock Homestead. Charlie says it was really interesting and cool.
This is the house where Laura and Almanzo lived a lot of their life, and where the Little House books were written. We all thought that this was cool: when Laura died, the house was closed up and everything was kept exactly as it was when she died.
This is the view from the porch on the main house.
Beautiful sunset as we drove for about three hours that afternoon, eventually bunking down near Kansas City.
Neat. The Laura Ingalls Wilder house. I brought a book a few weeks ago, which was called A Little House Traveler: Writings from Laura Ingalls Journeys across America. And I haven't started reading it yet. I think I'll start now.
