Los Alamos, NM (TEA Day 17 Part I)

Dad got here late Friday night! We are all really glad he’s here!

On our way to Los Alamos we stopped at two churches in downtown Santa Fe.

This is the San Miguel Mission. It’s the oldest church building in the U.S.

This is the entrance to the Loretto Chapel, which contains the Miraculous Staircase. It was a very beautiful church.

This is the Miraculous Staircase, which has no supports for the arch. The only supports are small metal bars so that earthquakes don’t damage it.

An hour later, we arrived at Los Alamos, home to the first atomic bomb. We went to the Bradbury Science Museum there, about the atomic bomb.

It was a very interesting museum, especially after reading so much about Los Alamos.

This is fused sand and dirt, called trinitite, formed by the intense temperatures of the atomic test at Trinity, 200 miles away from Los Alamos. Eddie thought it was really, really cool.

After the museum, we drove a few minutes to Bandelier National Monument.
