Yesterday we went to the Grgich Hills Estate (and winery).
After that, we drove to San Francisco to stay with the Dominicans in Oakland, CA.
At Pier 39, we got tickets to the Escape From the Rock tour, a 90 minute boat tour of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.
It was really foggy at the Golden Gate Bridge, but clear as day at the pier.
Here it is.
Alcatraz. The US army set up a base here, but soon abandoned it because it was too unpleasant.
There was never more than 300 prisoners at a time on Alcatraz, although 1500 eventually stayed there, including such famous law-breakers as “Machine Gun” Kelly, Al Capone, and “The Birdman of Alcatraz,” Robert Stroud.
We circled the island twice and heard former inmates and guards narrate the tour.
San Francisco from the bay.
It also very windy. Very windy.
After the tour (and a little before the tour) we went sightseeing on Pier 39, one of San Francisco’s most famous piers. We were wondering why Pier 39. Why that random number?
We had dinner at a seafood restaurant, Bubba Gump’s. Charlie really liked it.
We got some cool cups. Charlie really likes them. Marty had a mango chiller, Eddie had watermelon lemonade, and Charlie had Flower Power Punch. The cups light up, and Eddie’s and Charlie’s project the Bubba Gump’s sign from the bottom.
Charlie got to ride the merry-go-round. He loved it. He rode on a dolphin.
We checked out some really cool and quirky shops on Pier 39.
These are some of the tastiest magnets that I’ve ever seen!
Mom says this magnet is for Aunt Pammer.
Dad liked this sticker.
We also went to the Treasure Ireland store. Marty liked this sign.
We liked this, but didn’t think it was a good idea to get it. Mom agrees.
We stopped by the Alcatraz store, which was very monochromatic to the point of making you dizzy.
BEST! STORE! EVER!
Most excellent!
We had fun in San Francisco, but it was a long day.
